BikeCare vs Strava My Gear: component tracking compared
Strava is installed on almost every road, gravel and MTB rider's phone, and its My Gear feature reliably counts the kilometres on each component. What Strava's help pages do not document is a step from those kilometres to a remaining life, a service interval or a weighting for wet weather, surface and elevation gain. That is where BikeCare picks up — and it does so from the very same Strava rides, because BikeCare receives its activities through the Strava connection. This comparison is therefore not an alternative to Strava but an extension for riders who use Strava anyway. Every detail below was taken from the providers' public sources on 19 July 2026.

For recording rides, segments and community, Strava stays the first choice, and BikeCare does not try to replace it. What BikeCare adds is the maintenance side of the same kilometres: remaining life per component, service intervals, a calculated tyre pressure and cost per kilometre. Run together, one app records the riding and the other looks after the bike.

Where Strava is stronger
Where Strava is the better choice
- Strava owns the data, BikeCare draws on it. Every ride BikeCare evaluates is created in Strava first — in the app itself, or through a sync from Garmin, Wahoo, Apple Watch and other devices. That dependency runs in one direction only, and it runs in Strava's favour.
- Community and segments are Strava's home ground. Follows, kudos, clubs, segment leaderboards and challenges run deep there, and BikeCare deliberately does not try to rebuild any of it.
- Strava is already installed, and it covers more than the bike. Alongside road, gravel, MTB and e-bike, Strava carries handcycles, velomobiles, virtual rides and running shoes as gear — plus route planning and offline maps in the subscription. If all you need is a kilometre counter per component, you can manage without a second app.
- Resources and release pace speak for Strava. The German App Store listing showed version 472.0.0 on 19 July 2026, updated a few days earlier. BikeCare is built by one person in Germany and cannot keep up that pace.
What BikeCare is built for
Kilometres become a remaining life
Strava shows how far a component has been ridden. BikeCare works out how far it will still last — for chain, tyres, brake pads, cassette and 20+ further parts, in kilometres and in days.
Wet rides count for more than dry ones
Remaining life is weighted by the conditions: wet weather and surface for the drivetrain, elevation gain for the brakes. A rainy ride over gravel eats more chain than the same distance dry and flat, and that is exactly how it is counted.
Tyre pressure is calculated, not noted down
The calculator takes system weight, front and rear tyre width and the tyre system (tube, tubeless, hookless), and on hookless rims caps the result hard at the ISO/ETRTO maximum. In Strava, a pressure value would sit in the component's free-text note.
Chain care follows the method you actually use
Hot wax, drip wax, dry lube and wet lube each have their own intervals, weighted again by wet weather and surface. Someone who hot-waxes gets different dates from someone running wet lube through the winter.
A service log that knows the costs
Workshop visits, part prices, warranty dates — all recorded, and exportable as CSV or PDF. BikeCare turns them into cost per year and cost per kilometre, per bike and across all your bikes.
Reminders you set yourself
Push and email are configured separately, each with its own rhythm. If you do not want emails, you get none — without losing the push reminders.
Wear weighted by the work done
On chain, cassette and chainring, BikeCare also weights the work performed: 200 km out of the saddle in the mountains loads the drivetrain harder than 200 km rolling along the flat. The maths runs on kilojoules per kilometre, and only where power was actually MEASURED with a power meter — Strava's estimates are deliberately left out, because they ignore wind and drafting. Without a power meter, the calculation is unchanged.
Common questions
Can Strava calculate the wear on my bike components?
Strava's My Gear feature counts the kilometres on each component cumulatively, but it does not derive a remaining life or a service interval from them. According to Strava's help pages, a component carries brand, model, weight, fitting date and a free-text note; there is no target value for it to count against. So the rider still has to know when a part is due (as at 19 July 2026).
Is BikeCare a replacement for Strava?
No. BikeCare does not replace Strava, it adds to it: rides arrive in BikeCare automatically through the Strava connection, and BikeCare works out wear, remaining life, service dates and costs from them. Recording, segments, kudos, clubs and challenges stay with Strava, where they are far stronger. Both apps run side by side, and the link is set up once.
Do I need a Strava account to use BikeCare?
For the automatic ride import, yes — BikeCare syncs through Strava only. If your Garmin or Wahoo already uploads to Strava, as most do, nothing else is needed. Anyone who deliberately rides without Strava can still keep bikes, components, services and costs in BikeCare by hand, but loses the automatic kilometre count.
Does Strava have a tyre pressure calculator?
Strava's gear and component feature does not document a tyre pressure calculator, and there are no input fields there for tyre width, system weight or pressure unit. A tyre can be added as a component and a pressure value typed into the free-text note — that is storing a figure by hand, not calculating one. BikeCare instead derives the pressure from system weight, front and rear tyre width and the tyre system, and on hookless rims caps it at the ISO/ETRTO maximum (as at 19 July 2026).
Will Strava remind me to wax or oil my chain?
For bike components, no care or lubrication intervals are documented on the Strava help pages we checked. A chain collects kilometres in Strava, but there is no distinction between hot wax, drip wax, dry lube and wet lube, and no cleaning cycles. For context: a kilometre-based email reminder is documented at Strava for running shoes, not for bike components (as at 19 July 2026).
Can I track front and rear tyres separately in Strava?
Only up to a point. Strava's help pages state, word for word: "Bikes can only have a single component of any type associated with them" — so one part per type per bike. In BikeCare, front and rear tyres are separate components with their own distance ridden and their own pressure value, because they wear down at different rates (as at 19 July 2026).
What do Strava and BikeCare cost?
Basic use of Strava is free; the German version of the pricing page at strava.com/subscribe lists €74.99 a year for an individual account, while the in-app prices in the German App Store differ from that (as at 19 July 2026). Whether the gear and component feature itself requires a subscription is not stated unambiguously in Strava's public sources. BikeCare is free for up to two bikes; BikeCare Pro is optional and includes the AI auto-setup, the Copilot chat and the monthly report.
